Scooter for gf - Piaggio zip50?

Hey Im new to scooters and the like and looking to help my girlfriend get a scooter. Shes 18 from WA, and hasnt got her drivers licence, and a scooter licence is the best way for her to go as i can teach her on her L's as i have only had my licence for 2 years. So my question is has anyone had any experince with the piaggio zip 50? and can they recomend it for town driving and say 60km zones. Would it reach 60 if unrestricted? she is quite light if that counts.

     Replys Much Appreciated, Thanks.

     Mate I've got a Zip50

I'm some were around 90~100kg so no feather weight. On the falts after putting a1000ks on it

it's pulling 60~65 ks it slows with a strong wind in your face though or a steep hill.

it would hit a little faster on the flat if I'd remove the spacer washer in the cvt.

I travel about 50ks each day from Sandgate into CBD and works like a champ it hasn't let me down once, only thing I've done to it was fit a louder horn and had to replace the bottom exhaust bolt twice but that's only because of hitting the exhaust when putting it up on center stand to close to a brick wall

This is my first scooter but wont be my last, after riding around on it now I'd like to go up a couple of cc's to give me the 80~100k roads  Wink

     hi Kingie

the little Zip would certainly be up to the task. BTW - legally you're not allowed to act as an escort until you have 4 years on your license but you might have a good chance of getting away with it. Wink

What area are you in? I work at Ace Scooters in Joondalup, we have a demo Zip 50 that you're more than welcome to try out, although it's not yet run in so won't necessarily give a good indication of the bike's capabilities.

Re: Scooter for gf - Piaggio zip50?

Thanks for the reply's, how much does it slow down when going up your average hill lol, sorr i would be more acurate if i could. Is there any 'braking in' things you have to/adhere to? And from Albany so a 5 hour drive to Joondalup lol.

Im guessing im abotu to ask a really silly question... what does on the faults mean?

And regarding the license for  years i just doubled checked at the dpi website http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/learnerdrivers/1471.asp

"When you are learning, you must always be accompanied by either:

    • a licensed driving instructor; or
    • a person who holds a current and valid licence and has held the class of licence specified on your permit for at least 4 years.

A person who has held a current driver's licence for at least 2 years can teach you to ride a moped if you have a moped learner’s permit."

Sorry not trying to be rude :) but is there something im missing?

    LOL ok maybe not...

General rule of thumb is no more than 3/4 throttle until the first service at 500km. Also vary the speed as much as possible. The restriction means that you can't really help but run the scooter in properly anyway as the bike is restricted to 50km/h even if you use full throttle.

BTW - we have had scooters from the store shipped to Albany. Not for a test ride though Big Smile

ohh so the restrictor (whom the sales person told me he can remove wen i have it serviced) stops you from say more than a 75% throttle?

No unfortunately not. But it will stop you from doing more than 50km/h. Once it's derestricted the bike should achieve 60-65km/hr, although we have heard of people achieving slightly higher speeds.

Ah ok Thanks. So as a sales person not selling one to me lol, would recomend it to your say family? I was also told that they are more reliable than a 2 stroke engine. How long do you think it would last with low to moderate usage? Perhaps how many km's can the go b4 they start to become an anoyance?

Re: Scooter for gf - Piaggio zip50?

You are better off de-restricting after the first service, so that the scooter is worn in correctly.

Also just remember it is illegal for a 50cc scooter to go over 50kmph!  So therefore by de-restricting you are breaking the law.  But it is quite common practice.

Isn't the Zip a 4 stroke?  A 4 stroke 50 is going to be quite slow, where as you might get more grunt froma  2 stroke.  There are a lot of 50's on the market, so take a look around at Scootersales.com.au, and check out Scooter Magazine.  Get some ideas on choices (you will be surprised what is out there), and test ride as many as possible.  You might find that you love the Zip, but you might find that something else is more appropriate.

Re: Scooter for gf - Piaggio zip50?

well if it were my family I would strongly encourage them, having gone through the whole process with them of seeing if a 50cc would be suitable for their requirements, to have lessons & go for their license regardless of whether a 50 would be suitable for what they wanted.

50s are a great way to start & the Zips in particular are virtually bomb-proof. There are cheaper 50s on the market but I doubt many of them could claim to be as reliable as a Zip & some would struggle to achieve the speeds that the Zip can manage.

If you think that there might be any chance your GF might want to upgrade to a bigger scooter in the future then go for a black Zip as EVERYONE wants black scoots so they tend to be easier to sell than some of the other colours.

Re: Scooter for gf - Piaggio zip50?

OK I meant 60~65k's riding on a  flat road Big Smile

And drops to 50~55 up a hill. 45k on 1 hill and it's a bugger to even walk up that one Smile

This is on a Black Smile zip50 that is (as you would buy it from a store) and then break it in over 1000ks

I've now done 7626k's with no problems at all it's a 4 stroke so no adding oil (or having to remember to add it )

Was quieter then some others I'd tried, important to me when leaving home at 2 am and not wanting to wake the family

The spacer washer is in the cvt and can be done at a service but I have not had this done and it does the trip/job very well

I'd recomend it to anyone as a first scoot or even to my old Mum and Dad. I now have the bug and wish to travel longer, faster,or have the option of the highways as requiredWink "just got to get some milk dear".

My wife now leaves at lest one child with me at home as she knows the scoot is rego'd as a single seater and I can't go anywere untill she's back home Surprise

I started on a  Yamaha Jog 50, and loved it.  That scooter is the reason I am now on my third scooter in 5 years.  It is a great starting point, and a good way to judge if you want to ride or not.  My husband took the risk, got me on a scooter, and look at me now.  Another excuse not to get my car licence :)

I only got my car L's, and then I was able to get my bike licence.  6 years later the L's are still current, (they renewed them as well when i renewed my bike licence :)) and I have a open RE-A licence :).
