    Vespa GTS 250ie

    BONDING WITH THE VESPA

Last week I bought a Vespa GTS 250ie. It was a demonstrator with 500k’s on the clock. I got offered a good deal, really being at the right time at the right place and I had to jump and grab it. I’d been looking at 250’s for some time and was doing a lot of research and test riding (which are on some other threads). The GTS was on my short list along with the Derbi, Beverly, Bug Hawk and Sportscity.

I’d been looking at 250’s because I’d been frustrated with my Daelim 125 being out of its class out on the highway. I’d had no problem with it as a commuter but I wanted the extra 20+k/h that the 250’s could give. I’d only had 3 short test runs on a GTS but I was impressed with Piaggio’s 250cc fuel injected Quasar engine. It was smooth, powerful and fast with a top speed of 120+k/h. It also ran 25+k/l fuel consumption which is the same as the 125 was running. This was the performance I was after.

There were some things however that I was unsure about with the Vespa. Firstly was its weight, and that made it feel less like wanting to be tossed around through traffic, It felt a little to big for filtering, and I wasn’t sure about the retro look and it was a “vespa”… but it was hot in a classic old style way and it had that engine. I was aware that I’d never get a GTS at this price again, what with the dollar and all and I wanted something decent to ride out the big crash, so I got a loan while I still could, and bought the damn thing.

I got it on Wednesday. In Sydney last Wednesday was cold, windy with heavy rain storms. So was Thursday. So the first two days on the Vespa were horrible for riding but I was really desperate to try it out. It’s hard getting to know a new scooter in foul conditions. In peak hour traffic the GTS felt heavy and cumbersome, it felt unbalanced, especially turning at low speeds, it didn’t fit between cars, and on the wet road I was so nervious I was steering it rather than riding. I ended up going home not sure if I’d bought the right scooter.

The sun came out on Friday and the roads were finally dry. I got to take the GTS over the familiar roads of my 50k daily commute. I was getting to feel ok about putting the scooter over into corners and getting the feel of how much throttle I had to give it to bring it back up again. I was enjoying the fantastic power of the 250. It’s such a different way of riding after the full throttle ‘ride it like you stole it’ way of caning that I did on the 125. On the 250 the whole ride is much more cruisy, half throttle, engine purring along with that withering acceleration up your sleeve whenever the road was clear. I don’t filter as much and I’m actually not riding as fast. The GTS is very stable when its moving but I still find it clumsy at slow speed.

On Saturday I took it out on the freeway to check how accurate the speedo was using that 5x1k speedo check that they have on some expressways. The speedo was exactly accurate! On a Scooter!!! The GTS handled the freeway conditions perfectly. On the flat it sat easily on 110 edging towards 120 and I’d say it would go faster once its run in. I could travel in the fast lane and was overtaking cars. This was what I’d been wanting. Fast and stable. When I filled up I worked out that I was getting 26k/l.

Today I took it for a run through the twisties of Galston Gorge and Berowra Waters and then up the Old Pacific Hwy to Mt White. The GTS handled all the corners effortlessly, holding the line at speed, accelerating up the mountain. Smooth as silk. I decided to take the Freeway home. The GTS was awesome. As soon as it hit the smooth bitumen it just leapt up to 110, then 120. There are some big hills on that run and the GTS just flew up them, 120 up the hill from the Hawksbury bridge, I couldn’t believe it. Home through Bobbin Head (More twisties) The Vespa didn’t miss a beat. Great 2 hr ride but Jeeze my butt was sore!

Later that afternoon I took the Daelim up to the shops and I was shocked how different it felt. It was so small and underpowered. I had to rev the sh!t out of it to get up the hill, It didn’t feel right. The Daelim just wasn’t cutting it anymore and I realised that I had finally bonded with the Vespa. It was now officially my scooter. Got to take it in for its 1000 k service tomorrow. Then I can really start to bond. I hope my butt gets used to it though.

There is no doubt in my mind that small scoots are far more fun zipping through traffic,  but the likes of the GTS250 make hills, freeways and country roads really enjoyable with their effortless performance & great handling.

Congratulation on your new Vespa and entering to the 250cc world.

Yes.  250cc is the way to go if you are doing highway travel.

I bought myself Aprilia Scarabeo 250 even though the Vespa GTS 250 is on my shortlist too.

Good luck with the ride.  You'll love it.

    Yeah congratulations Pete!

I've got a Bug Hawk but since owning it have ridden quite a few other lesser capacity scooters, and there's most certainly a difference between purring along nicely at say 80 kays an hour on a 250 and revving the absolute crap out of something smaller with WOT.  And, of course, with the speed of a 250 it opens up a whole new world by being able to go further afield on day trips, which it sounds like you've been doing, and take a pillion passenger more comforably.  I don't think I'd wanna go back to something with less ooomf now.

So enjoy your new Vespa, bond away, and remember there's always those Air Hawk seat cushion things that people rave about should your butt still hurt! Big Smile

Thanks for the feedback guys. Just got the GTS back from its 1000k service. $260. But jeeze its going sweetly. It really is a top notch scooter and Im getting more and more comfortable with it. Im interested to know how the other 250's are going. Nearly bought a Hawk and although I didn't get to ride a Beo it sure looked the goods too. With the dollar crumbling I feel like it was the right time to take the plunge. Looking forward to some longer trips over the summer.

Sad to see you leave the 'Daelim family' peteCrying, but glad to see you are starting to love your new ride.  I'm sure you'll be happy with it for a long, long time and should allow you to do whatever type of riding you are wanting to do.  PS I think the colour looks great!

    Good luck!

    Re: Vespa GTS 250ie

    Hi Pete,

I have had my Red GTS250 Vespa from when they were first released (3 years) and coming up to 24 000km on the clock.  To me three years is a long time to own a scooter, I usually start looking for something new after two, mainly because I want a change and because other scooters I have had seem to of lost a bit of oomph!  Not the Red Vespa, runs beautifully.  I have been looking at the Super 300 but the licence issue is putting me off, must be getting a little lazy in my old age.  But truly I haven't found enough reason to trade it in just yet, it is a scooter I have really come to love.  Enjoy your riding.

It is good to get all this positive feedback. Thanks crew.

I had to chuckle this arvo. Im a teacher at a wild boys high school in Sydneys south west. When I got the Daelim all the boys wanted a go on it. Every arvo they yelled out things like "Burn it!" or "Chuck a do nut!" as I headed out the gate. I was leaving school today when some of the boys came out to check out the Vespa. The took one look and turned away in disgust. "Its a girls bike " one of the islanders muttered. They all started laughing as I rode away. Little do they know. They're totally un retro out west.

Great review!!  Feel like I was riding your Vespa when reading.

May I ask how it handles wet road, wet track, holes etc....?

And is it stable when running on the freeway with its relatively small wheels?  I still haven't seen a Vespa on the freeway in Melbourne yet.

     Thanks.

     Thanks.

My hesitation in the wet was mainly not knowing how it would handle if the back slid out and not wanting to drop my new scooter. I havn't tried putting it down into a corner in the wet yet. As far as the dry is concerned I'm learning how well the Vespa handles in a corner. The scooter stays on the lean until I lift it with both acceleration and body weight. the rear brake trails the back wheel well and the vespas weight keeps it really stable. It is best in corners going up hill. The only tricky times come with cornering sharply at low speed. The weight of the Vespa makes it oversteer and want to fall over. I nearly dropped it this arvo when I had to brake while turning sharply at about 5k/h. It makes it dodgy winding around cars in gridlock. So far I've been able regain balance using my feet on the road.

On the freeway the weight of the Vespa is an advantage and it is unbelieveably stable. The 12" wheels aren't a problem and the single shock arrangement on the front wheel works a treat. I got the rear shockies taken up a notch and the ride is much better. The fantastic power makes it a treat for the open road and it can keep up with the traffic easily

As far as the colour is concerned I always believed yellow was the most visible colour on a grey road and was happy to get it for that reason. It was also a special and I didn't have a choice, and I think it looks good too.

Bankstown area. Im trying not to think about possibilities like that although some stupid things sure do happen out there, or any where for that matter. Keep smiling I say. By the way your red GTS looks so cool. How are you enjoying it?
