Riding a scooter in South Australia

Hi everyone, I have just got my L's (for a car). I've heard that people with their license can drive 50cc scooters without getting a bike license. I was just wondering if this was restricted to people who have a FULL driver's license, or not. I don't really want to spend $300+ getting my bike license and then finding out that I don't feel comfortable riding a scooter.

Riding a moped (50cc) under a Car License is only applicable in WA and QLD and yes, you do need a Full Car License.

Emily going for your bike license really is the best place to start when trying to decide if the wonderful world of scooter riding is going to be your thing. The lessons required prior to the test will give you a taste of what to expect as well as giving you the head start with boosting your skills & confidence. With an automatic or manual bike license in your back pocket you'll also have many more options available to you than if you just have your car license. You haven't indicated the kind of riding you will be doing & the speed limits involved, really 50s are only suitable for local roads & you'll quickly find yourself being targeted by angry car drivers if you can't ride at the speed limit at the very least.

Riding a scooter or motorbike on the road is vastly different from driving a car as there's so much more you need to think about & be aware of, it's a little like being in a computer game with traffic & pedestrians coming at you from all sides. Besides, wouldn't you rather spend the $300 going for the license (using the school's or instructor's bike) than paying out a minimum of $2500 (new) on a scooter before realising that it's not something you want to pursue?

     OK, from Transport SA's website:

The holder of any class of Driver's Licence is authorised to ride a 'moped' (provided the moped is compliant with the Australian Design Rules and is registered and insured). A 'moped' is defined as a two or three-wheeled motor vehicle (other than a power-assisted pedal cycle) that:

    • Is propelled by an internal combustion engine with a capacity not exceeding 50 millilitres; or a motor other than an internal combustion engine; and
    • Is capable of a speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour.

The holder of a learner's permit cannot ride a 'moped' on the learner's permit, unless the permit is for class R-DATE or R.

    ----

So you need to have a Driver's Licence for a car (not a Learner's Permit) to ride a 50cc scooter, so you will have to go through all the tests, training and what-have-you to pass your Ls for cars first and be on your P plate first.

If you are just interested in getting on two wheels then the fastest way is to get your motorcycle licence properly.

Re: Riding a scooter in South Australia

Thanks for the quick responses guys! I guess I'll have to think about how committed I am, haha. I did check on the website but didn't find what I was looking for, half the time I don't know where to look for them because there are so many different pages with different information. I think if I was going to get my proper motorbike license I would want to get a higher powered scooter anyway, and it would end up costing a lot more.

Thanks again for your help :)

Initially yes it will cost you more but in the long run it would save you money if you go directly for the bike that matches your needs rather than working your way through multiple bikes (take it from someone who knows Big Smile). Again, it's about not limiting your options. You could even go for a manual license rather than automatic, just in case you ever have the urge to hop on a motorbike or a geared classic scooter.

SA doesn't have automatic or manual licences, either for cars or motorbikes.
