    Warranty Servicing (Time sensitive)

I have I quick question for dealers about the warranty of a scooter.  If you sell to someone out of town, what happens if the scooter breaks down while under warrenty?  Does the scooter need to be shipped back, or can it be looked at through someone else (locally)?

Firstly, you need to check the terms of your warranty.  A good warranty will generally allow you to take it to any authorised dealer for that brand to do the work, however there have been cases where the warranty rested with the dealer where it was purchased from.

You also might find that if you take it to a dealer that you didn't buy it from may be less inclined to do the work - warranty work makes no money (you genearlly get half the workshop rates, and are paid based on a "factory time" that equates to less than half the time that it actually will take, and that's before all the paperwork that has to be done too) and ties up the workshop from making money - so make sure when you ask the dealer if they'll do it, that you tell them why you've brought it to them.  Newly moved into the area is a pretty good reason, but telling them that you bought it at dealer X because they were cheaper, but you live closer to them so thought you'd get the warranty work done locally, is not going to make you any friends.  You may still get the work done, but you might find it takes a little bit longer than you'd hoped it would...

I had a chap who tried that with us.  He lives locally, but he was happy to travel 30km to save a couple hundred dollars when he bought his scooter.  First problem and he came to see us, thinking that we'd be delighted to help him with the problems that he was having.  I'll let you use your imagination as to how that one panned out.

The scooter in question would be a Bolwell VS 125.  If I didn't buy it locally, it would be bought from 1600-odd kms away.  (Shipped up from Scooter HQ).  Even with extra shipping, they're cheaper, and they have a different colour selection available at the pre-price rise cost... Also, the salesperson we've been dealing with is a jerk (going as far as to snort derisively and roll his eyes at me when his collegue offered to see what he could do about matching Scooter HQ's price), so I don't want to be giving him my money.

Any "Qualified" mechanic can do your servicing without effecting your warranty (as long as he/she fits genuine parts)

If you use a dealer that prefers to use non gen parts then your warranty will be effected...

Any major brand like Piaggio, SYM, Aprilia, Bug, Yamaha etc have dealership networks & any dealer is able to look after warranty work regardless of where you bought it from.  If you've test ridden all the local guys stuff & then buy the same thing down the road for a few dollars less they might be a bit peeved. However if you've done all the work, shopped around, let them have a go & they couldn't come to the party then shiite happens you can't win them all. I'm all for supporting the local guy if they are close enough. At the end of the day its your money &  you should get looked after regardless of where you purchased the scooter. Part of being a professional dealer network for a brand is to professionally support that brand, end of story....

When it comes to warranty best to first take it back to where you bought it from, if that isn't practical then the closest dealer. When it happens to us we look after the warranty no problem. The only thing with us is we look after our customers (those who purchased from us) first. Thats all. I have heard of situations where dealers intimate that should you have a warranty claim their workshop could be booked out for six weeks if you bought elsewhere. If this is the case buy something else, somewhere else.

like I said "any qualified merchanic" (yes even your local servo..If ya game) can service your scoot.

But If he is not, don't do it to your self ..

Like wise if he is qualified but uses aftermarket part then by by.

So unfortunatly the ownes lies with you..Make sure your service center is using correct parts.. The old "I just took it to him and asumed he was using gen parts, he is one of your dealers" bupbow, Your fault....(or the person servicing but i dout that they would put there hand in there pocket)

    Surely not!!!

Isn't it Qualified Motorcycle mechanic..It's a different discipline, we can't work on Toyota's & retain warranty so I'm sure it works the other way around. Doesn't the Ultra Tune precedent relate specifically to cars?
