Well, Stuscat, if you find out let me know as I'm interested too.  As for being the "rolls royce"  the other afternoon I had been riding for about a week in the rain and slush and wanted to hose the muck and grime off poor big red Audrey.  I thought it a bit of a waste to start the engine and go five metres onto the grass so I tried to push, well, everything was so boggy that it was more a case of "rolls can 'ardly"  he he

I think it is a case of "we are big and can go faster" exclusivity.  They are definitely trying to exclude the smaller scoots that they do not see as capable of the speeds and distances that the Maxi's are able to do.

In saying that though, there are a few 250's and 500's around now that are definitely not in the Maxi category but more than capable of keeping up and even touring with them.

Wife first, scooters and birds second.
    Got to remember that order......

Mean!   I think (having ridden 2 scoots in my life) they are very different things. I wonder if maxi owners tend to have them instead of cars and smaller scoot owners have them as well as - or as a second vehicle a bit more.

I think a good example of that is my son's Vespa GTS250,  I wouldn't call that a maxi,  but it's proved itself time and time again as good highway scooter,  frankly I sincerely believe there are a lot of so called maxi scooters that would never in a million years be able to do over 40,000 of highway riding at 100 km/h or more without breakdown of any kind, let alone regular 10 or 11  hour rides with only brief stops for re-fueling.

His GTS250 has never required anything other than normal servicing, tyres, disk pads and a new belt.

Before the GTS, he was riding a slightly modified Vespa PX200 and doing the same trip for around 2 years,  his PX200 had a different carbie and a sports exhaust,  it would only do about 115 km/h so in someways that was even more remarkable as he was riding that virtually flat out for the whole 900km and it never missed a beat.

So yes,  maybe the maxis can go faster,  but I seriously doubt they are any better at distances than a Vespa except perhaps they might be a little more comfortable due to their longer wheelbase and generally softer suspension.

The bigger ones - Burgman and Majesty with the larger engines also run at much lower engine speeds on the freeway - more torque I suppose. They also have the power / speed to accelerate strongly from 100 to overtake.

i like my maxi as it has a screen to hide behind.  and a decent amount of storage. i also have a smaller scooter too. that is fun to ride as well but for a different reason.

    different strokes.

Mine is the rolls royce... fuel injected, water cooled, twin front discs with ABS brakes, rear wheel handbrake, twin headlights, adjustable seat, tyres as wide as a sports bike, lots of storage and more power than I have the skills to use.

well, despite sharing the garage with a few Germans, I'd consider mine a "Ferrari" of scooters... it's red, fast, sexy, Italian... as to why "we" have our own forum?? who knows and who cares, enjoy the ride...Party!!!

    Re: maxi question

maxi scooters are pretty much the same as any scooter but just differ from most in capacity , size and performance.

The reason maxi riders get a forum to themselves is that maxi scooters are different. The bulk of scooters being purchase right now are 50 / 125 cc in size and are used for short daily commuting. A Maxi can be used for a number of purposes from commuting to long touring. Maxi's tend to be ridden by people who have had a little more experience as well.

Now I hope this all changes but Maxi Scooters havent enjoyed quite the success I hope they would have ....... YET.

would it be like the equivalent of having a PC forum, with a special section for Macs?  or am i right off base?

    Re: maxi question

     yeh you could say that.

Maxi Scooters are a good thing and since taking on my Scarabeo 500 I am not bounded by any destination and can also carve up city traffic like a smaller capacity scooter. So it gives me for what I need far more scope.

Its just horses for courses, and a maxi will just give you some extra options.

Bit like a mac , you want to have the options of handling media like photos and videos with ease and have an operating system that gives you no hassles then get a mac !!!! just some more options
