Scott:In saying that though, there are a few 250's and 500's around now that are definitely not in the Maxi category but more than capable of keeping up and even touring with them.
I think a good example of that is my son's Vespa GTS250, I wouldn't call that a maxi, but it's proved itself time and time again as good highway scooter, frankly I sincerely believe there are a lot of so called maxi scooters that would never in a million years be able to do over 40,000 of highway riding at 100 km/h or more without breakdown of any kind, let alone regular 10 or 11 hour rides with only brief stops for re-fueling.
His GTS250 has never required anything other than normal servicing, tyres, disk pads and a new belt.
Before the GTS, he was riding a slightly modified Vespa PX200 and doing the same trip for around 2 years, his PX200 had a different carbie and a sports exhaust, it would only do about 115 km/h so in someways that was even more remarkable as he was riding that virtually flat out for the whole 900km and it never missed a beat.
So yes, maybe the maxis can go faster, but I seriously doubt they are any better at distances than a Vespa except perhaps they might be a little more comfortable due to their longer wheelbase and generally softer suspension.
