    question on scooter licences

just wanna know if getting a scooter licence is the exact same procedure and method as getting an R.E. licence? Meaning, is the waiting list for scooter assessment the same length as the waiting list for an R.E. licence?

Do you mean you want a license that will enable you to ride a bike greater than 50cc or do you mean the "moped" license which you need if you don't already have a car license?

Yes, its the same queue. The assessor just gives you a RE or a REA license depending on which you turn up with that morning.

On the same note, if you don't already have a car license and turn up that morning on a 50cc, you'll still go through the same assessment but will end up with a moped license!

so does the assessor jump on their usual bike and follow you around......i spose as long as you are riding to the speed limits, they can use whatever bike they want, to follow you. Reason for  the query is the licencing centres are so full up i have on numerous times been asked by the automated phone service to ring back another day due to the "unusually high volume". bugger trying for a scoot licence if even scooting licencing bookings are full. they need more bikes to ease the waiting line congestion.

That's right, they'll have a chat with you beforehand. Run through the route they want you to take - testing your attention & then follow behind watching how you handle yourself with relation to positioning, head checks etc You'll then be tested on low speed manouvre & emergency stop. When you return to the licensing centre you're expected to reverse your bike into the parking spot. So you ride past it slightly with indicator on, keeping an eye on the traffic & pedestrians, before wheeling your bike back into one of the bike bays available.

If you intend to take your test at Joondalup the carpark where you do the low-speed manouvre (riding around in a circle within the white lines on either side of the carpark) has a fairly dramatic slope to it so if you can find somewhere near home where you can practice  this should help. As I think Dozer said in here months ago, if you have trouble with this just get out there & keep doing it, riding around & around until you get comfortable. Or fall off the scooter dizzy!

If you know of an instructor they should be able to tee up a test for you easier than you can yourself. Otherwise give it a go first thing in the morning, maybe around 8am or earlier. If the place isn't officially open there should be a message telling you to call back between certain hours. You may find that your earliest opportunity for a test is in over 6 months, but once you've booked a test you can then call back regularly to snap up any cancellations.

so they still get you to do O/U turns and 12meter 50k/h emergency braking even on a scooter? Yep, the car park you talk of is neil hawkins park. That is where I did my "O" turns for my R.E. test, and being on a slope, I failed all three, but mr assessor gave me 3 more chances, at which i still failed the next three, so he said "ok, just one good one at least, and he gave me advise on how to accomplish it on a slope and that last one i did it ok. He only gave me 1 point for failed O turns. Funny, i nailed the O turns on flat ground, but not on a sloped hill- couldnt go up there to practice...because, again....catch-22 for illegal riding.

Regarding parking on your return trip, its a little hard when cagers take ALL of the parking bays there, yes....including that dedicated M/C parking bay, so i didnt get to park there. Ive been to the jndlp centre alot in the recent past, and everytime i go up there, there always seems to be a stuuupid cager parked in the M/C bay. I later (few weeks later) ran into the assessor i had, who remembered me, and i took the opportunity to ask him "where do you assessors expect us to park on return if cars or other m/c have taken up the space, and he said it was a matter of looking for the next closest legal parking area, which he admitted can be a "grey" area of the law for motorbikes. And just to mention I got failed outside jnndlp centre for doing a U turn across that double white line there. I went past the m/c bay and other bays on the left which were all full, so i checked the other side and grabbed the empty bay on the right....FAIL.

so at this stage, unless the long waiting list gets decongested, i will be content to stick with 50cc riding. WAAAy too much time on the phone waiting eeeeeek

    Re: question on scooter licences

What a shame Stuscat! I've been told by Gibbo that Tuesday & Wednesday morning is the best time to call. First thing. I managed to talk to someone the morning I rang, a Tuesday, but then was told I would need to go to a licensing centre to book the test! I wound up spending over an hour during which the people working there had no idea of how to handle my requirements of removing the automatic restriction but not the 250cc restriction from my license. I just wish the Vespa 300 was available as by all accounts this could well be my next bike, meaning I'll have to attend the test again to have the 250 restriction removed! But there's nothing 250cc+ suitable for me currently in either scooters or motorcycles!
