    Melb Scooter License

I don't know a whole lot about getting a motorcycle license. I've read that it's normally two days. The first day is getting your learners, after some theory, then riding a back, and sometime later it's the actual license.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for places to get it done?

Mate, if you are in Melbourne, it'd be worth the trip to a DECA facility. It'll cost you about $235 which include training and testing.

I got my licence many years ago when Vic Roads were testing and it took one day only. There are plenty of places that do it but it really depends what area you are in. I know someone who got their learners at Motorcycle Motion in Keys Rd, Moorabbin and they were very good. I'm pretty sure you can do your learners test in one day as opposed to two also.. Just over $200 is about right from what I hear.

HART at Kilsyth and Tulla also do licensing, there is also Rider Brothers out at Calder Park.

You get your L's, have them for atleast 3 months and no more than 12 month (or you have to do it again), then you sit a restricted license test (do not need to display Ps) and hold that for 12 months and then you go full licenses.  BAC limit of 0 applies on Ls and restricted.   My advice is get off your Ls as soon as possible.  LAMS is supose to be operating by 1 July this year, until then, you are limited to 250cc scooters/bikes on Ls and restricted.

My understanding is that you don't need to display "P", only if you already have a full car license.

Re: The "P" plates, that was my understanding too. Is it true that you do not have to display it even if you don't have a car license?

To clear things. In Victoria you will need to get your L's first. This includes sitting a practical exam and a knowledge multiple choice exam. The practical exam consist of 4 exercise. Once you have been on your L's for more than 3 months you can then sit your motorcycle license.

The motorcycle license exam consist of practical examination. Whether you will gain full license or your Ps depends on the following:

My understanding is that you will have to display your P's if you have (a) never had a full driver's license and (b) if you are currently on your P's for your driver's license. If you only have say 3 month left on your current driver's P plate, then you will only have to display your P's on your scooter for another 3 month.

I just did my learners at the weekend .(Vic)

The learners permit is valid for 15 months in Victoria, you must hold learners permit for 3 consecutive months before you are allowed to go for licence.

Only car licenced drivers on their P's need to display a P plate on the rear of their motorbike. The probationary period is 3 years.

Those who already have full car licence do not need to display P plate on rear of bike

and whats good is there is no speed restrictions on your learners in Vic, unlike NSW

Spot on Sodarocks!  I asked about this when I was doing learners at the weekend

When you get your motorbike licence, whatever amount of time is left on your P's for your car licence eg. say 6 months, will apply to your motorbike licence, so you will have to display a  P plate on the rear of your bike for 6 months.

Nobody has answered my question yet though... do those of us who do not have a car license AT ALL need to display Ps? And if so, is it for the entire three year period?

Poor Ron....none of us is reading your question probably. So sorry. Yes...you will need to display your P's for three years if you have never had a car license. I think that is what Freedom Seeker was trying to get across as well.

Is Ride Tek good? As I have also just done my Ls and is thinking of where to go for the Ps in three months time. What is the condition of their track and scooters like? What are their instructors like?

Yes I thought they were very good, I thought the track was fine, the instructors I had were very good, scooters  were fine I had a go on a 125 and 50cc, from what I saw they had 3 different ones, a real small one, yellow, too small for me, if you go to their website its on their main page www.ridetek.com.au ( good website too!), a bigger 50cc which I had a go on, which was fine and a 125cc which I tried too,  both modern in good condition!

I would go back to get my licence!

    I would recommend them!.
