    HUGE K's - what's classified as lot's of k's on a scoot

Hello Again - it's just me the Crazy Clown....again!

While i've been looking around at the second hand market, what do you classify as huge k's on a scoot - something like a LX150 or the like..... In my opinion something that is 2-3 years old that has done 20-30,000 k's seems like a lot of miles for something so small....???

I'm trying to compare it to buying a car, for example, if it's a 1-2 year old car and it's done 100,000 - that's big k's as they say the  average yearly k's on a car would be between 20-25,000, so anything under that is classed as low miles....

Does that make sense?? Maybe it doesn't??

I suppose what i'm trying to work out is what is the average yearly k's on a scoot....

Going to the Sydney Motorcyle Show soon!

You are spot on with the comparison.

High K's equals low value. The LX is fitted with an oil filter meaning the oil filtration system is superior to most 125's, if it were a cheapy I'd say stay away. 20,000K's on one of these is nothing really if its been well serviced. With these K's you want to pick it up cheap so you have some money up your sleeve JIC.

Better off spending a little extra & get a low K example, mean you will have some value after you've thrown 10,000k's on it.

Wot Brendon says, although because there is such a wide range of engine types on scooters there can't be a hard and fast rule.  20,000k on a carbied 2 stroke engine might be getting close to exhausted, whereas on a fuel injected 500cc the engine could be settling toward optimal performance.  A good quality carbied engine like that on the LX 150 will still have a lot to offer at those km's, but you might also find that general wear-and-tear on the vehicle having been used that much is worth looking at too.

Thanks Guys, i reckon you'd have to be the most patient bunch on any forum i've ever been on!  It's a pleasent suprise to be a "newbie" on a forum and not get slammed for asking so many questions! YesBig Smile

Still researching..... my boyfriend thinks i'm in love with the computer!!....

I was going to post a message to see if there was any scoot mechanics (sydney based) that would come look at a second hand scoot for me - slip them a 50 or a box of beer or something, but not sure there are any of those types of people on here...

I'm liking the the Vespas - and i've still got my eye on the 06 Model LX150 with 6,500k's for $5K - i could make him an offer perhaps if it's in good order!  I've been looking around, and it seems in NSW they are more expensive than in any other state.... all the ones i've seen (LX150's) have more k's and are more expensive - so i'm thinking this one might be ok - keep in mind that i've extended my budget from $3-4K - now to $5k - don't really want to spend any more than this to be honest - but want a vespa!

It's a bit hard buying second hand if you dont have anyone who is mechanically minded to go with you, and being female, some salesman etc will tell you anything, and there is a good chance you will believe them.  Since buying mine, I am learning a bit more of the mechanical language (I do a good job of pretending to understand what they are talking about, nodding and showing appropriate facial BLOCKED EXPRESSION.

Good luck with your search.  Don't stress the questions, as a well researched person will make a well informed choice, and will make the right decision, with no regrets.

    thanks Dakoda....

this is the idea behind my Q's...researched, informed, right decision, no regrets....that's the plan anyway!

I hate the way that most sales"men" think women came down in the last shower, i usually change their opinion pretty quickly when i simply just say "do you think i'm stupid!!"

i might just go myself and look at this blokes scoot anyway.......and see what my gut says to me first of all.

Go with your gut!  If you think you need to, take pics as well.  I have done that before (with a house though... as I was looking at one to buy and my husband was in another state).

    Re: HUGE K's - what's classified as lot's of k's on a scoot

I payed $2500 for an ET4 150 for my wife about 10 months ago. It had 16,000 I'm on it and the engine and gearbox etc was like new. It ran like a dream. However.... The previous owner wasn't a nice owner, and didn't look after it. It sat outside for all of it's life in the rain, hail and shine, and was a little rusty in spots. I think Vespa build quality is generally good, and if your after an LX, 125 or 150, there's a heap around at resonable prices. I'd be looking at the 10,000km mark, topcase included and proof of it's servicing shedules, and check it's not been dropped and dented/scratched. I reckon $4,500 is achievable on a 150 in mint condition, if you go private, and $3,800 on a 125. Good luck. Oh, are you related to blinko?

Oh, are you related to blinko?

     - no.... who is that!!

So folks, been to look at the LX150 today and it'll be a NO for me!  The bike looks like it's had a hard life.....a few scuffs, and scratches and marks - last service was done by himself - "i just changed the oil and filter myself"....no log books, rather vague....no mechanics details he could give me, front suspension has been re-done, but vague about that too.  "if your interested in buying it, i'll get it serviced for you!" blah blah.  It certainly wasn't showroom condition and he wasn't interested in budging on the $5k - not that i would have given him anywhere near that after seeing it!

So it's back to the drawing board!!!!Crying

BTW - just returned from the Motorbike and Scooter Expo at Homebush...... it was shite!!!!! Stuff all scoots on display - mainly Vespa, Piaggio, Aprillia a few Hondas - but no Sym, Bug, or any of that crowd.....??

    Well that is a shame.

Maybe look at some of the Aprilias, they have a Mojitio which is a retro and is a good looker.

Shame the show didn't have some of the larger dealers like Sym.  But lots of other good stuff there as well
