Pete, you should have said you were going. I was itching to get the my new scoot out and did a bit of what you did but earlier. I passed by Berowra at around 7:30am on Sunday. I want to do the loop via Spencer and Wisemans Ferry next week - depending on the weather.

It was one of those spur of the moment things. Didnt realise I was going till 10.30. Well I knew I was up for a ride but didn't know where. Where did you end up? It would be good to oganise a run to do the 5 ferries ride with a group. I'd be certainly up for it again. Next week end there is a run to Patonga which is what Im aiming for. See the Sydney "Coz we can" thread for details.

    Hi Merrily wannna check Patonga?

Re: Vespa GTS 250ie - Patonga

I was at the survive the ride night this week and asked the scooter mechanic to look at my rear Sava tyre. It had worn and was looking a little bald in the centre. He confirmed that it was on its way out. This is after 4000k's. I was a bit surprised as I thought it was a bit soon but it is a 12" wheel and the 250 has got grunt.

So what to replace it with? He reckoned the Pirelli's were'nt much better wear wise. So then it was down to a Michelin Pilot or a Conti Twist. The shop that I bought the GTS from only stocked Savas so I went up to my favourite bikeshop at Firebrand. Had a talk about tyres after their jibes about me buying a Vespa. Yes the Sava had had it. Yes they could fit another tyre while I waited. Had Pirelli, Conti or a Bridgestone Hoop HO2 in 130/70/12. I took Anthony the mechanics advice and fitted the Bridgestone. The Hoop was not on the list I'd made after surfing the forums but Anthony knows his stuff and I took his word for it. Cost $126 fitted and it feels ok so far. Yet to give it a work out as its not advisable to cane a new tyre before 50-100ks.

Has anyone had any experience with the Bridgestone Hoop? Anyway I'll keep you posted.

Re: Vespa GTS 250ie - Patonga

I got an interesting email from James re engine noise

"you mentioned the 'noise'. when i had my GT200 i had a problem where by the engine felt like it was going to jump out of the scooter.

i asked Nate at my scooter about it and he couldn't find a problem.

one day i mentioned it to Murray at scooter central and he asked me what RON i was using. he suggested going down.

at the time i was using 98 and i went back to 95 and all the 'engine about to punch a hole in the top of the head' stopped

not sure if this was what you were/are experiencing and i'm speaking out of turn. but these vespies can be very different i have found. so one can run really good on 95 and run even better on a higher RON, but another scoot may prefer 95.

anyway, all i know is the problem stopped. and it wasn't the 'roller's as one person suggested to you...."

I've been running the GTS on ron98 but I just filled up on 95. After only 3ks the engine seems to be running smoother. James may have been onto it. I'll keep you posted after I've been running it longer..

    Re: Vespa GTS 250ie - 98 octane

You actually have to be careful and know that there are differences when buying 98...I found out at Caltex - some of their pumps have one sort of 98 and some of the pumps have another....and its a pain when you queue at the wrong one. So my Vespa runs well on one 98 but not the other (higher charged) one...I got a HUGE lecture from the boss about which one his Jaguar likes...and like the Vespa it is also NOT the higher dearer one.,.....and then its confusing because other stations like Shell call them something else again. So this girl has to go and read the tech blurb and figure what is what....<GRRRR>

So if you love your vespa go the 95 if unsure and go the 98 but get the right one!!!....when you get better educated on the differences....Now I won't bore you about engine pinking and all that hee hee!!!

BTW Pete - I can't make it to Patonga tomorrow as have a appointment I cant get out of - but if you go have fun and I'll enjoy it vicariously!

GT200 runs a carby, GTS 250 is injected has a crank angle sensor setup & technically should make use of the higher octane fuels. 200 is a completely different setup to the 250. I've not had a problem with using 98 (regardless of Brand) in Quasar engines but they have all been Derbi or Aprilia.  Interesting to hear the Vespa's mapping is struggling with the high octane stuff, perhaps Vespa should ask Piaggio if they can use the mapping from the Derbi GP1.

I cant tell anymore. The noise I'm getting is an intermittent knocking when the scooter is idling. Its not a problem when the scooter is in motion and it is different to what James was describing on the GT200. It does seem to change with different octanes but that could be because of different idleing speeds. Im taking it in for a service in the next few weeks and I'll get the mechanic to have a listen. It could just as easily be the rollers and the Italian "character" of the Quasar.

Im ignoring it for the moment and see how it develops because it's too easy to get neurotic about such things. Im still having a great time with the GTS and I'll be taking it for a run tomorrow weather permitting. The Bridgestone hoop tyre feels solid on dry roads. Yet to find how it is in the wet.
