    servicing.

am going in for my 3000 k service. Should the drive belt need replacement? Or does it depend on how cheap and nasty the scooter is?

Should be just oil, valves, filters, and general check up, yes??

Unless you've used the transmission to hold your scooter on slight hills etc, instead of using the brake, your belt should last at least 8,000km.

As is always the case, exceptions apply, often due to simply bad luck.

8-10k is the usual life span for a belt and should be replace around that time even if it hasn't broken, the last thing you want is to be broken down on the side of the road.  The can break earlier just like car tyres can have blow outs.  Just a fact of life.  Though good quality belts will most of the time last the distance set down.

but how do I know if the belt would need replacing? It seems fine. It feels sometimes as though there is a little slipping on take off every now and then, but apart from that it is fine.

    I just don't wanna get ripped for a belt i don't need.

    Re: servicing.

3k shouldn't need a belt, but depending on how hard you ride, it could need one.  Sometimes it is not easy to tell if a belt is going to let go just by looking at it.  Small cracks can appear in the side of the belt and also between the teeth.   This is the only real way of telling, but how long it has got, no one knows.  But I know my time left stranded on the side of the road is far more valuable than a cheap belt if it looks like it needs to be replaced.

If your mech truly believes you need a new belt, then put on in.  There is no backup when you are stuck in the middle of no-where.

You've got a Sach's City or Montego from memory which have an appetite for belts if you are hard on them, usually between 4 & 5,000K's they'll munch it. It is something you have to look at every service with one that gets a hard time. Other than than its a no brainer.

    Re: servicing.

yeah, that's why i asked. I got told by one person that the montego and the cino got thru them but the sachs is better. But I am not sure. It is only like 80 bucks, so it's nothing, but i don't like paying for un needed work. Guess I'll see what this fella says anyways. At least I have some info on it. The mech even said it should be more like 4 to 6000 k's.Seems alright thus far, they don't sound like they are $$, seem more interested in keeping it on the road. I'll blog like a mofo if i get ripped by anyone anyway. Got a few other sites i am part of and the answers all seem the same. It's hard to tell based on what I say instead of having the bike there. I just hate only having limited knowledge about something. If i could get a hand book and parts i'd do it myself, but i was an automotive mech, not a scoote mech.

I haven't tried these guys yet, its just that i got ripped badly from another mech, and found out, did the comsumer affairs thing and all, and he lost his job over it.

Ever since I have had a massive paranoia when it comes to servicing etc.

    Re: servicing.

I said if you are hard on it 4 to 5,000kms. If you are easier on it or a light rider it will last longer. The first thing we ask a Montego owner when servicing is when was the belt last done.

A new belts is cheap compared to the inconvenience of being stuck on the side of the road with a broken one. Think of it as insurance & its cheaper to throw it on while its being serviced, a Vmoto Montego Belt is only $44.00, they have it all apart anyway.

    Re: servicing.

You generally need a new belt when either 1) its thickness is less than the minimum recommended thickness or 2) when its starting to look a bit ordinary (ie cracks, weathering etc appearing on it).  But as everyone will tell you, its better to replace it before it breaks...

When we have to replace belts before they are expected on the service schedule, we'll get approval from the customer first and let them know why we recommend it.  Then we'll give them the worn belt when they come to pick up the scooter and show it compared to a new belt.  Its not hard to reassure someone what you are doing and why.  Good brands have decent service manuals that go into detail as to what needs to be done at each service.  Anything that is done outside of those schedules should be able to be fully explained by the mechanic.  If they can't tell you what should be done before the service, suggest you go elsewhere.

But some scooters belts will last well in excess of 10,000km.  Depends on the scooter, the quality of the belt, the weight being driven around, and how its being ridden.  But Montego's always seemed to go through them quicker than you'd expect, so I suspect that all the other clones are no different.

    Re: servicing.

I have a service manual, and it gives step by step on oil ilter, air, oil changing, types etc, but only explains what needs to be done. I never thought of checking it for when the belt needs replacement,  wow, helps if ya read. It says check every 3000 replace when needed.

Yeah as far as the cino montego and sachs go i thought they were pretty much the same bike.

Thanks for all the help anyway guys. Much appreciated.

Not being a smart ass or petty, it's a public forum and fitment of a proper oil filter in a 125 is an issue for technical buyers who research their potential scoots and this forum is one of the most commonly used resources.
