Even though the oil change interval is around twiice as often on a Bollwell (2500 km) compared to the QASAR bikes, the SYM Bollwells don't use standard oil fillters.  The Syms have got the metal oil strainers which just need a quick clean with petrol and can be re-used continually.

The Vespa oil filters are around $30 ~ $40 each.  I do my own oil changes and only use about $5 of oil, so still works out cheaper for me.

What do you think about the line of thought that goes,"The amount of oil in a scooter engine is pretty small and the oil has to work really hard, even with oil extender, therefore the oil should be changed more frequently than the serivce intervals"?.

Good point there, petegailey.  According to the Scarabeo manual, you change oil and oil filter at 10,000km, but the local scooter shop recommends changing the oil at 5,000km intervals.  After this weekend I will have clocked 5,000km and will be changing the oil early in the week.  Will be doing a little cruise up to the NW of the state, just under 500km round trip.  Will have a good chance to check out fuel consumption at sustained highway riding.

Quality oil is one of the cheapest things you can put into an engine, much cheaper than bearings & rings. Labour is much less too.

I change the oil in my 4st dirt bike every 2 tanks of fuel..Never had a problem (even though they are known for blowing up). But it (again) depends on how you ride (i have a habit,so my friends say, of riding it like it was stolen).Wink

Fantastic weather on way up but increasing side winds and a few stops on the way back, but in all a total of 496,3km at highway speeds with the usual hill climbs and associated twisties plus slowing through little towns and villages.  Ended up using 15.61 litres giving the figures of 31.8 km per litre or 3.15 litres per 100 km

I don't think I can complain about those figures for a 460cc engine plus the fun factor was in the extreme high bracket.

Here we are in the Perth petrol station carpark on the way home:

My Sym Citycom 300i fuel consumption hovers around 27 to 29 km/l here in NZ. Mostly city driving, start/go stuff. Perhaps our colder air and at sea level helps. Most mornings the temperature is below 10 degC. Hope it will improve as I have only 2300kms on it. Odometer is 2% optimistic as verified with a GPS. Speedo is about 10 - 11% optimistic which is a pain.

How do you get 160kph out of it?? Mine seems to peg at 8250rpm, 130kph true GPS speed (145 kph indicated)?? Is yours standard or is it modified? Should mine improve with more kms on it??

Heavier rollers. When you have someone with a scooter like this who may use it more on the highway than around town they will often go up on the roller weight to make it a better cruiser. Trade off is accelleration.

Nice of Select to do this work for us..Yes

I missed something Kiwi, didn't you get a GT200? Where'd the Citicomm come from?

That took me a bit off guard as well. Two almost the same names, two different riders. So overwhelming.Tongue Tied

If you have time to hesitate, then you're already too late. Ride safely everyone.

When you consider the size of your windscreen and the wall of air that is pushing, you are getting good figures for a relatively new engine.  I bet too that the fun factor of the beo ride is still putting a smile on your face from ear to ear. Big Smile

You are not wrong there, nearly done 4,000km's and still smiling.

I am looking to ride back down to Sydney in the New Year but this time I am hoping to take some side roads.

2,000 km ride and still disappointed that it finished so quickly.

What is the standard weight of the rollers and what did you put in?  What RPM does yours pull at that speed. Mine seems to peg at 8250. Wonder if it is rev limited even tho redline is at 9000??
