    Had first lesson

Wow, had my first lesson this morning (to get 250cc license). Was great! Wasn't nervous at all which is great! Will probably be a different story when I do one on a PX200 though! gears to change! And of course I'll be sweating during my test too! yikes! Can't wait to get on my own PX200. (Pic in the members pictures area) PS. had two doses of Steve and Keith's (special) coffee.. awake much!? *ping*

Don't stress JimmyLee, it's not that much different from riding a pushbike with gears. I found the best thing to do is to look around & admire the view so you relax. Keep looking up, trust yourself & the bike. You'll feel & hear when the scoot needs a gear change, it talks to you in it's own language. The clutch is easy as being in the same area as the gears. Reduce the revs a litte, squeeze the clutch, change the gear, let the clutch out steadily increasing the revs & you're away!

If you manage to turn the PX in a u-turn that is within the limits allowed can you let me know how you did it? My turning circle is currently about 1.5 times what it should be!

Now to be found "working" at Ace Scooters (sales, accessories, coffee maker, dish washer, gopher and general stirrer).

Currently riding a Vespa GTS250ie. Hopefully this will be the last time I upgrade. For a while atleast.

yeah I found it fairly easy to ride.. I managed a pile of u-turn's in the ace front carpark (with cars on both sides) which isn't much space! I just kept the revs at a fairly low speed and let the clutch do all the work whilst in the turn, no braking at all. Just squeezing the clutch in and out to engage and dis-engage the driveline through the turn... hopefully I don't goof it during my test! hehe PRACTICE!

Sounds like you're doing great Jimmy.

You'll love the PX, I certainly do.

Just remember not to panic if you stall the engine in traffic - I did and pulled a semi-mono. Frickin scarySurprise

    Wassat?

When I stall in traffic I have a laugh at myself, put the biggest grin on my face & get the bike re-started ASAP. I guess that's the benefit of having a big L on your back, people expect you to fluff it! Big Smile

Lavacat best of luck! Although with all that training I don't think it'll be luck you need. Except maybe where the weather is concerned. I hope it's a nice day with blue skies & a warm sun.

Don't be nervous on the day. The guys there are used to newbies & people being nervous on the day of the test. From what I've heard they make allowances for nervousness causing people to make mistakes.

I look forward to hopefully meeting you on a group ride soon.

Hold the back brake on a bit, that keeps you more stable during low speed cornering/U-turns.

Only a few more weeks till I'll be loving my Agility again. Just hope it still loves me...

Thankyou very much ScootaChic , I was wondering how many errors  you allowed to have to be a successful pass ,on the ' Big Test Day 'on the 4th of September 2008 at 2.50pm at Midland Licensing Centre , and for the group rides I will looking forward to it soon Smile

Being Nervous ,is not a major thing , is doing everything perfect on the 'Big Test Day' on September 4th of 2008 at 2.50pm.

    Re: Had first lesson

My test is on 18th Sept.

I've learned the following already from my first lesson:

If you leave your indicator on for too long after turning, it's an instant FAIL. If you speed more than 10km's over the posted limit during your test, instant FAIL. I think there's also another instant fail, but I forget what it is now. Make sure you only rest on your left foot, even if your on an auto scooter. Two feet for reverse parking into bay's only (or perhaps also in an emergency?)

From what I understand, the trick is being aware of your indicator and showing the assessor that you are very very very observant of what is going on around you. This means when making a manouver in your own lane or into another lane or road, or anywhere check your MIRRORS, indicate (if required), then LOOK AROUND.

The assessor is going to want to see you moving your head around to look left and right (and behind you), this also means at intersections, especially ones with lights, even if the adjacent traffic is still, at a red light, LOOK there.

This was pretty much what I was pegged for during my first lesson. I need to "look around more".

On the U or circle test, keep your indicator on, in the direction you are turning or circling. Be sure to look back when doing your U turn to check for traffic.

Indicate about 30mtrs away from your turn, HOWEVER (this got me), if there's a small road or carpark entry before your turn, try to leave your indication until just after or just on that turn off, then indicate for your turn.

When going from a single-lane turn off into a dual-lane road, ride directly into the lane you desire, do it in one move, not two.

Ride where it is safe. on the left or right side of your own lane. EG keep left if safe, move to the right of your lane if there are lots of parked cars on the left or people trying to pull out in cars, or cyclists, or poorly parked cars. When doing this just check mirrors and look, no need to indicate unless changing lanes. (do not ride in the middle of the lane)

When turning, try to be on the appropriate side of the lane you are turning from. If your turning left from the left lane, stay in the left (if safe), if your in the right lane turning left, sit in the left hand side of that right lane. This helps prevent anyone slipping up next/beside/past you during the turn.

wow, that was a lot. heh. just some of the stuff I learned! I'm practicing my looking around and positioning on my 50' each day to work and back :)

I'll hopefully be up at ACE on Saturday for another morning ride to get some more experience on the bigger scoot! yay!

One more very important one I just remembered.. roundabouts, be very careful in a roundabout with your position. You'll get screwed other wise. If you are in a dual-lane road and roundabout, STAY in your lane, and on the side of your lane that you started in, finish in the same spot on the other side. remember to indicate in and out of the roundabout too! You'll get screwed if you cut straight across a multi-lane roundabout, oopsy daisy!
