Silverflyer- Looked at a satelis the other day, they are a very nice scooter very sharp modern design especially the dash. The reason I did not consider one, is as the original poster pointed out, the styling is too"maxi" for me. One of the best looking of the maxi's, but just not my cup of tea.

Allen- with regards to the modifications- I will be sure to post up the results. Certainly the variator has already made the acceleration much more rapid. I know what you mean about the firm suspension. I have my bike set up so that it is best suited to my wife and I riding together. I want her to be as comfie as can be so that she is happier riding with me. She has just about nodded off a couple of times, so obviously it is pretty comfie for her as it is now.

So Allen has a black one, Adam has a dark grey one, and I think Coffeescoffer's / Mike's is a red one. The full colour range!

I don't know what I'd choose if I had the money to buy a Scarabeo (here's to hoping!). But from pictures I've seen, you can't go wrong with any of those three colours. They're all so classic and classy!

Black is great coz black looks good on all vehicles

Red is good because it looks italian and vespa-ish

Dark grey is good because it blends with the plastics, making the bike look less plasticy, more painted

Not so keen on the new silver coloured one.

They probably say,  "oh thats a great looking Vespa"  in much the same way they say  "I love your yellow Vespa' when referring to my Bug Bandit  Tongue Tied

I've got a Scarabeo 250ie (Black) and it's awesome. If the LAMS law change here in Vic had happened earlier in the year I would have probably gotten the 500. That being said I absolutely love my scooter. Adam I'd be really interested in hearing how the exhaust mod goes - both in any perceived performance and in sound.

One thing I've noticed when riding other scooters is the quality difference. I did my full license test last week (passed!) on a Kymco scooter which only had 800km on the clock and yet when braking hard there was a creaking noise coming from the front area. I'd be horrified if a Scarabeo did that. Maybe I'm being harsh on the Kymco as it was owned by the testing centre and could potentially have been dropped a few times in it's short life. My last scooter service I was given a loaner Bolwell scooter and it performed well but it felt really skittery with the smaller wheels. The big wheels on the Scarabeo is a big advantage and has a real feeling of quality - I really don't think you'll regret it at all if you go that way :)

I will be sure to post about it as soon as it is done. I have the variator, and will be installing the malossi exhaust (could not get gianelli), new air filter and malossi kevlar belt as soon as the exhaust arrives. I paid for it today, but it is coming from italy. I am hoping to use my friends GPS to record before and after performance tests. Ideally someone else with a totally stock 500ie can do the same with theirs, then each step can be compared. If the exhaust makes as much difference as the variator did then it will be a seriously fast scooter! I am benchmarking against my wifes mini cooper s which is 0-100 in about 7.4 seconds (?) and is already toast!! Maybe Allen will time his? Even without the GPS, just using the speedo would be good for comparison.

I agree with your comment about the quality. I think that bike gives a very strong impression of quality. I think it looks very classy.

With regard to people's comments....I often get "OMG that is the biggest scooter I have ever seen".

Scarabeo 500ie.  Now that you have me on my favourite subject, I will first endorse all the comments posted so far.  As most know, I started my return to two wheels with a Scarabeo 200 and thought it the bees knees.  I think the large wheels, large storage space and good grunt helped me make my decision.  For my wife the large, comfy passenger seat was the clincher.  Well, 6 months in to riding my dream machine I happened to see Coffeescofffer's bright red Scarabeo 500.  I'd heard of people faced with something amazing, standing with their jaw stuck open, well that's what I did.  Style, solidity, beauty, thoroughbred lines, reliability.  The weekend before making up my mind I took a trip with a local group up the midlands and found my 200 kept pace with the best, however it was a bit of work.  When I test rode the 500 I couldn't believe the magic of the ride.  I barely tip the scales at 60kg, yet I can handle this machine on and off its centre stand easier than I could the 200.  Around town it crawls with  the stop start traffic between  lights or creeps along uneven, unsealed roads.  Today I went on another trip with the local group for around 170km and although we went through patches of rain and hail, the Scarabeo flew along the back country roads at 100kph precisely and sure footed.  It was comfortable and safe.  The ride felt solid and the safe.  When I came to hills, the purr just rose ever so slightly and I always felt there was more if I needed it.  At one time there was a short road chance to get passed two cars to catch the front riders.  I twisted the throttle and pulled  effortlessly passed them.  Glancing down I was a little shocked to see the dial at 140kph.  There had been no screaming of the engine or wobble just a continuation of the smooth ride.

I guess too what has continued to amaze me about the 500 is its fuel efficiency.  Sure I was getting up to 35km/ltre with the 200, but with over twice the capacity I can get 25km/ltre in a mixture of city/country and better just on the highway.

As for passers' by comments.  I don't think I have failed to park in a public place and not had an admirer come over and want to chat about, "My, that's a nice scooter."   Sometimes when you're in a hurry to get to the shop before closing time it's a bit of a downer, but mostly I remember my first reaction to seeing "Big Red Audrey" and give them the time to talk.

Bad points.  I guess I am yet to find one.

    ciao,  Mike

    Hi Mike,

It sounds fantastic. Can I ask you a question I asked of others here. What makes you prefer the Scarabeo 500 over a motorbike? (Since it's sort of up there in that price range). Is it the fact it's auto that you like? Or style? Or something else?

    Hi ColdCola,

As mentioned, or at least hinted at, before I started my two wheel riding on a little Suzuki Stepthru back in the late 60s to middle 70s.  Since then I've always been drawn to and dreamt of owning and riding a Harley (hopefully not a swear word here).  The reality is that due to pounding the pavement over many years I had a hip replacement late last year.  When I went through the licencing process (pre learner/provisonary courses) I came home very sore from continuously getting on and off the bike, each tme swinging leg with the bad hip over the saddle.  In order to get back on two wheels I turned my attention to a scooter.  Having said that, last week when I had a free afternoon in Melbourne I toured the delights of Elizabeth Street visiting Scoota City, Peter Stevens and Harley Heaven.  It was great to finally see so many scooters side by side in order to make comparisons.  Strangely enough though, no Aprilias.  Travelling through QLd I had noticed lots of large bike cruisers, many Harleys, but also Hondas and Yamahas.  I did look at quite a few of the Yamahas surmising at their relatively low seating but more upright riding position, but I cannot see any of them replacing "Big Red Audrey" in the near future..

But to get back to your question, to me the Scarabeo 500ie does have all the best features of  a two wheeler.  A lot of "modern" bikes need to rev at a pretty high rate,  that is, if you twist the throttle in top at under 4,000rpm, they cough.  If you want to accelerate to overtake or get out of danger, you have to change down. With  a CVT "gear box" a scooter is just that, Twist and Go, and one comment you hear from anyone who has ridden a Scarabeo is its incredible torque at low revs and right through the range.  Yes, the styling is well engineered and built.  Lots of lockable storage room ,compared with a couple of leather panniers and an incredibly comfortable riding position.  The big wheels are a real necessity for me. Here in Tassie, our roads are windy, narrow and rough surfaced.  I also need something that will take me around town but also make light work of highways.  Lastly, but by no means least in importance, I want something reliable with good servicing backup.   So, of course I have only one choice.

I would need around $30K+ for a Harley, but I can pretty well have all my dreams fulfilled for around $13K new less secondhand.

When you look at any scooter in the Scarabeo range, you are definitely drawn to have a second but more once you have ridden one you are compelled to own one.  They have that definite "X Factor" or "je ne sait quoi" .... in my humble opinion.

    ciao,  Mike

    Ok ColdCola,

Here are a few promised piccies.  Was surprised they look so much like the promos from Aprilia, but I guess it shows they are what they are said to be.  Enjoy and hopefully we'll be hearing at some date you have ordered one Big Smile

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting those great pics. Your Scarabeo is just beautiful!

I'm tossing up between upgrading to either a Scarabeo 500 or a manual motorbike.

You've made it even harder to choose!
