queensland..... license. where do i go and what do i have to do NOW?

As the q ride thing, to my understanding, with the day license thing doesn't happen any more, what do i have to do get

get the license that proves that i am allowed to ride the scooter i already ride?

    Also, how much is it?

    Is it hard?

And should i be a smart as$ and turn up on the scooter i am applying for a license for?

Is there ant possible way i can get it in a day?

    Thanks for any help.

Qride is "competency" based, and in my experience, if you are competent in the way you maneuver and control the bike, you'll get the certificate to get your license in one full day, but if you are awkward or it is evident you really could use additional practice, more than one day will be required.

If you have the opportunity to practice the tested skills (figure 8, emergency stop, etc) in advance that will probably help you to radiate competence during the Qride testing sessions.  The skills and attitudes you'll cover in the class (defensive driving, emergency turning maneuvers & counter-steering, etc) are truly extremely valuable skills.  I'd suggest approaching the class with an open mind, and trying to learn as much as you can.... after all you will be paying for it (to the tune of $300-350 for the one day) either way, instead of bringing a "this is a waste of my time and money" attitude into it, why not try to make it as enriching an experience as possible, and to get as much as you can out of it for your hard earned money?

Riding to the Q-ride training while unlicensed on the vehicle you are seeking to get a license for would strike me as...  unnecessarily cocky, and not setting the right tone for the training, but that may just be me.

Q-ride is not the only option avaible, i'm pretty sure you can still test in the "traditional" way, by scheduling a road test with Queensland Transport,  ...and that would be cheaper

If you have specific serious questions about the Qride experience, I can try to help... I've been through it once (about 1.5 yrs ago) on a scooter to get my RA license, and I am doing it again this next weekend on a motorcycle to get the A removed from my RA license, to get to my "R"'s.

Only thing I could add to what bemocked has said is that as it is competency based, if you are in a group of normal bike riders, then you will be held back whilst they do each of their competencies.

If you can, do it with only other scooter riders or if really possible (not sure if they will do it) on your own.  that way every moment is spent on something that you need to learn or a task you need to complete and there will not be time wasted.

I had never, ever been on a bike and did the Q-Ride with Morgan and Wacker.  I was the only scooterist with 6 motorcyclists.

They did hold me up a bit but I only had to go back for 3 hours on the next day to complete a couple of competencies and the road ride.  They will help you get it done as quickly as possible but they will get you to do more if they do not think you have the skills or maybe if you are cocky about it.

Best of luck whichever way you go Big Smile

Where I am (Townsville) QRide costs $575 for the beginners course, and that includes bike and gear hire for both days.

Keep in mind that you may be required to do the training on a motorbike anyway, as I have been told by department of transport that they don't offer automatic RE licenses.

Unless North Qld has broken away and become another state they do. Qld Motorcycle license comes in the following flavours

    Under 250cc

    Over 250cc

    In auto or manual

    "Hello ********,

    Thank you for your email.

Queensland Transport has never offered an RE (A) license. Motorbike license classes are only available in the R and RE classes.

Should you require any further information, please contact Queensland Transport on telephone 13 23 80 between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday (Local call charge in Australia. Higher rates apply from mobile phones and payphones. For international callers, please phone +61 7 3834 2011).

    Regards,

    Peter."

That is the exact email that I got from the queensland department of transport (with my name blanked out).  This isn't from the local branch, either.

I just spoke to our Q-ride accredited trainer just in case they changed the laws - They do an automatic bike license.

Does anyone else find it worrying that DoT doesn't seem to know its own laws?

Nothing would surprise me with any Gov Dept - some couldn't find their own bum with a map and a guide dog.

    http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/Licensing/Driver_licence/Getting_a_licence/Car/Licence_classes_and_codes/

RE and R are license CLASSES

A (automatic) is a license CODE

I was going to write a witty and clever comment here, then thought "naa screw it" -- I'm just gunna be a smart a$$.

I just spent half an hour onthe phone with department of transport, and the final verdict is yes, you can get an RE license with the automatic condition (I wanted to make absolutely sure).

     What a screw around, lol.
