scooter licence law......... it has probably been asked but i will again anyway.

I have issue with getting a licence for a vehicle that is under 150cc.   I have a 125cc i it will do a top speed comfortably of 95 kmh.

For me it means that unlike a 50cc i can actually safely sit in with the flow of the traffic. That means in my mind it is a safer vehicle.

It takes no extra skill for me to ride it as it is like riding a 50, but you're not a piece of moving traffic island.

It bugs me that you need to get a licence for anything under 150cc. If anything I think they should take 50ccs off the road and make it compulsory for any vehicle

to travel the road it should be able to reach and maintain traffic speed, then i would understand why i have to have a licence.

Why is it that you can ride a 50cc on the road on a car licence, which is potentially more dangerous than a 100cc plus size scooter?

but to get the safer vehicle you need that bit of paper?   My first car was capable of around 200kph, but my only restriction was for the first 9 months i could only take passengers with a licence of more than 2 years, i don'y understand why a 50cc scooter is seen as safe not to have a bike licence on.

Most of the people riding 50s, and i am not saying all, just can't ride them. They should make people start on a 100cc plus scooter.

this has turned into a rant....... bet it does not make sense.Super Angry   Embarrassed

I totally agree with you Brahd79. The laws concerning scooter licenses are a conundrum.Hmm

the govmnt is so backwards in this regard. You are allowed to ride a 50cc 2 wheeler on a car licence??......cars and bikes are 2 totally different types of transport, with totally different characteristics, its quite dumb that law.

Most of the people riding 50s, and i am not saying all, just can't ride them. They should make people start on a 100cc plus scooter.

gotta agree here. Ive seen ppl on scooters who should not be on one at all.

Pretty understandable rant brahd79 and you are not the first.

It is hard to work out why one state has the 50cc/car licence law and another does not.

One thing is for sure - it helps get bums on scooters.  You can decide for yourself if that is a good thing or a bad one.

However, there are an awful lot of people who started out on 50's and are now on bigger scooters and without the simplistic opportunity presented with that law, they may not have ever been able to sample the thrill of riding.  Different perspective?

More to think about but maybe it is not the law that is flawed but simply that it needs to have a training/skills component added Smile

    Hi,

I'm just starting out with riding a 50cc scooter and I agree with you - it doesn't have much power & I have to be extra careful on the road as heaps of cars love to pass me when I'm just starting the throttle. After only about 6 weeks we are looking for something more powerful! Although it can do about 60kph downhill!!

The thing I'd like to add is that I had a few hours training before I fully took to the road. I believe this is a must for anyone starting the trek to riding a scooter and it should be a compulsory component for anyone who hasn't ridden a motor scooter or cycle. Plus it helps with understanding the road rules on a different level. If you don't have the training, you'd may as well call yourself a sitting duck.

    Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Possibly the answer is to have a 50cc licence that requires the same level of basic training that is required in NSW for a Learners Licence (for example), it's about 6 hours of theory and practical,  costs less than $100.00,  if then you want a a full licence you can do the extra training / testing after a qualifiying period.

Compulsory speed limiters are giving 50cc scooters problems keeping up with traffic.

Delimited, some of those 50cc 2-stroke scoots can get to 90kph(+).

This makes fun of vehicle registration here in WA. 50cc scoots cost less to register - all because of the "magic" speed limiter device - helping the ill-informed believe they are safer.   Hmm

    Very well said Tracey.

I find it amazing that you can ride a 50cc scooter in Perth without any proper instruction. I see these kamikazes every morning and afternoon and I shake my head at their antics every time. Most af them don't even bother wearing any safety gear, let alone just a pair of gloves to protect your hands.

Even though it isn't compulsory to have a license in Perth I think it should be compulsory to do some sort of a training course.

If you have time to hesitate, then you're already too late. Ride safely everyone.

Thank you! I find that quite amazing - no safety gear at all?? Then they are sitting ducks & I wouldn't mind thinking they'll be in a hospital bed in no time at all. I ride with helmet, jacket & gloves ALL THE TIME. I wouldn't go anywhere near the road without them. I also bought them from Scooter HQ, who were really friendly but also very mindful of what I should be wearing. They also told me I HAD to have lessons before going anywhere near the road.

When I first came to this forum I actually saw a guy on a brand spanking new scooter... wearing thongs. Ouch. Yesterday I saw a girl on a Milan wearing tiger skin mittons on her hands. It took me by surprise because they looked like my wife's slippers.

I'm the same as you. I wear helmet, jacket, gloves. I'm picking up a pair of Dririder Nordic Pros (pants) this week and next is the boots.

Maybe having to do at least one or two lessons before you even leave the shop on a 50cc scooter should be compulsory. Even if it just a mandatory chat about road positioning etc.

I totally agree with all the comments posted here . The scooter laws should change. Sadly enough they class a scooter same as a motorcycle, in western australia , they have the idea of scooter been the same as motorcycle ,that's why you need to get licensed anything above 50cc , but we all know in scooter forums community that the automatic scooter is not same as a motorcycle , but in the eyes of the Western Australia , Licensing Centre , They still have no knowledge what so ever that even scooter are around ,in today modern society ,that we live in.

For example , I went to my learners Permit on the 4th of August 2008 , at the Midland licenising Centre , and the lady who serves behind the counter , didn't even that were scooters on the road ,that were driven by automatic tranmissions , she only had no  knowledge that were  only motorcycles driven around ,not scooters , I really think that doesn't makes sense that they class motorcycle and scooter into different categories. Then it will make perfect sense. Confused

I believe as a scooter handles differently to a motorcycle, is ridden differently as it has generally no gears or clutch, with a few exceptions, that it should be a whole different license to a motorcycle.

I would happily get a scooter only license if one was available in q land, in tha house respect, as I never want to ride anything bigger than a 150cc scooter.

Anyway, instead of trying to be a rebel i got my bike license today. Well part of it anyhow. Gunna book q ride and try and shortcut to the restricted part. Queensland transport doesn't have a clue but. One lady told me i can book right away, another said 6 months, then i was told that doinging it normally i would have to wait 6 months, then a couple of others said 12. About as organised as ze germans were at taking over the world.

You can book your QRide anytime you want after getting your learners.  You cannot get your unrestricted motorbike license in any way until you have held your RE license 12 months.  As I have recently found after being given the run around by department of anal retention transport, you can get a motorbike license for those with automatic transmission only.
