    TGB R50X

Hi, have just brought me a TGB R50X and would really like to hear from others that have this scooter, Especially the types of speeds they are getting and what mods they have done, if any, to get their speeds. I'm also interested in any technical/workshop manuals if anyone has access to these documents, i hope i am allow to request such information in this forum?

Some other questions i have regarding the R50X: is the standard exhaust pipe any good, it looks like an performace expansion chamber that other parts suppliers (e.g. Malossi) make, is it up to the job or should i look at upgrading to get some more km's out the beast??

    thanks

Congratulation and excellent purchase.  You will be very happy with your new scooter.  I should know, I have one Big Smile

On a public road, mine only goes 50km/h (53km/h really with the GPS, reading 62km/h on the speedo), but that is just due to Australian law.  On a closed road or a track, it will do 84km/h indicated on the flat and 91km/h on a slight hill.

The only things that I have done to it for track use is removed the ring restrictor in the transmission and disabled the rev sensor wire on the CDI unit.  I have been informed that there maybe an air-flow restrictor in the air box but I am yet to have a look for that.  Other mods due will be a pipe for sure and maybe a malossi variator.

But bang for bucks, it is surely a winner straight out of the box.  ScooterHQ are pretty clued up on parts for the R50X, so you might want to drop them a line for parts.

I have yet to get the all the restrictions removed but was impressed with the scooter capablities even with restrictions (speedo was reading 59km/h, so according to your post Tubsta it would have been ~50km\h) as it felt faster and quicker off the mark compared to some other scooters i tested (like the TGB 303). I'd be very interested Tubsta, to see what your (on track Big Smile) speed increases too with a new pipe and variator.

Could you tell us more in detail about "disabled the rev sensor wire on the CDI unit" mate, I thought one had to replace the complete CDI unit but if one can only disable or cut a wire that would be very helpful. And for the ring restrictor, is it an easy find in the transmission itself? Cheers!

It is the brown wire, but I didn't tell you that.

I will be writing up track prep notes shortly, I am just very busy building a house in my time outside of work at the moment and getting to the business end of it all, so it is sort of delayed a little.

    Tubsta,

be keen to read your track notes! Been riding my R50 for 2 weeks (to work) and have noticed that acceleration could be better when taking off at the lights, be nice to leave cars in my 2-smoke. But i'm still waiting to get the scooter deresitricted (still running the engine in, couple more hundred km to go). So i will wait to get it derestricted and see if there is an improvment in acceleration. Then consider changing the rollers and variatior. So i'll be keen to see what weight rollers you have for your track set up and what you have done with the air box?

    cheers

De-restriction will just give you better top end.  Infact, when taking the washer out of the variator, lets the mid range lag slightly (doesn't hold the revs up as high through the transmission range).  Best mod you could do if take off is main objective, is slightly lighter rollers.  I have yet to muck around with different combos, but will shorly give it a whack to find the best compromise (both top and and take off are important to me).

Thanks for the update mate, haven't heard it :) Should the ring restrictor in the transmission be an easy find for anyone who knows modifying of scooters in general? A friend of mine will help me out, however he hasn't modified a TGB before as they are not very common over here. Cheers and good luck with your house building!

It is found between the variator and the drive plate (crank shaft end of the CVT tranny).  Looks like a gold wedding ring.  You need to remove the kick start ratchet and drive plate to remove it.  About a 1 stubby job.

Thanks!  It is almost done Big Smile

Why is the speedo so far out? I just picked my R50X up on the weekend, (awesome scooter I might add), and have noticed my speedo is out to. Is this something common to scooters? Can it be easily fixed?

Yes this is very common across many scooters (even my 650cc bike is 10km/h out).  There are instrument shops that can re-calibrate the worm drive, but I think it would be a waste of money trying to get it spot on.  I ride around 10km/h over on indicated speed.  I just used a GPS to determine what the actual was so then I know what the limits are.

Yes, very awesome scooter.  I enjoy every ride I have on it, just wish I was home more to enjoy it!

Ok cool, will have to speed test mine one day, find out what its really doing.

Riding mine at night at the moment and very pleased to see how well the lights and high beam work.

Will be looking at changing the pipe later on down the track, otherwise as it is im extremely happy with it.

Hey Tubsta i saw u posting a comment on my thread on the TGB R50X. Wondering if you could help me on advice to buy wattos R50X wif perfromacne already done to it or a brand new one then getting it all done again? I am not sure how much the parts cost but i kno i will be using the scoot a lot, so if i decide to sell it much later down the track i wont be able to get much for it as da value will drop the older it gets?

So what do you think Brand new or 2nd hand? (has 1659 on odo for $2000)

PS. What if top speed rather than take off is the objective...what would you do to it?

    Re: TGB R50X

Short update: Had the ring restrictor removed today, my mec also tried to cut the brown wire but then the bike wouldn't fire at all so had to re-attach the brown wire again. Might be the Auss R50X is different from the European version. Tubster, you did just cut the wire, nothing else for this part? Will test drive more later today but first impression was that the speedo seems to go up and up even though the real speed is not increasing the same rate. It went over 70 but I am pretty sure I was not there. Anyone comments on this? Next recommended step would be to replace the pot & perhaps CDI, any recommended (Malossi?) CDI well suitable for the R50X guys?
